St Teilo's Church & Bettws Chapel (Church in Wales)
Welcome to the Pastoral District of Llantilio Pertholey and Bettws Chapel with Llandewi Skirrid which are part of the North Monmouthshire Ministry Area in the Diocese of Monmouth. The pastoral district consists of St Teilo’s church (Llantilio Pertholey) with Bettws Chapel (Bettws) and St David’s church (Llanddewi Skirrid) which serve the people of the Mardy and its surrounding areas near Abergavenny on the South Wales border. We hope that you will find something of interest on our site and look forward to welcoming you to one of our churches in the future (www.stteiloschurch.org.uk)
Fr Julian Gray: The Vicarage, 10 The Pines, Mardy, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, NP7 6HQ tel: 01873 859881
St Teilo's was built in the 12th century but the site has been of religious interest for much longer. In the 6th century land was given to Teilo, Bishop of Llandaff (or one of his followers), for a Christian cell. Pertholey translates as ‘Defiled Entrance’, possibly a reference to early Christian Martyrs.
Today the church is facing all the challenges of the 21st century but is still a central part of the community for a large number of people. Recently St Teilo’s has created a Riverside Walk celebrating the wildlife and nature surrounding the church. And it also has a remarkable array of different crosses and a Chapel dedicated to those who died in WW1
The refurbished tower has 6 bells which are rung for the Sunday service and on special occasions. The bell ringers of St Teilo’s are always on the look-out for new recruits. Practice night is every Thursday from 7.30pm onwards and beginners are most welcome. If you fancy 'giving it a go' then please email Peter Griffin at petergriffin@talktalk.net
To the east of St Teilo's Church is the nearby 'Holy Mountain' (Skirrid Fawr) with the ruins of a chapel dedicated to St Michael adjacent to the northerly trig. point and a nearby landslip ascribed to a lightening strike when Jesus was crucified. An underlying geological fault that might also explain the leaning tower of St Martin's at Cwmyoy is an alternative explanation
